Bamboo Fullness

Painting bamboo and doing Chinese calligraphy are closely related. The same strokes are used for both, so in some sense you could say that I am "writing" bamboo! The effect is very calligraphic.

If you look at a cluster of bamboo you will see thousands and thousands of leaves. The artist is not painting a "realistic" version of the bamboo. I choose to paint just a small selection out of the thousands to make the pattern of the leaves clear to the viewer. Sometimes I choose to paint just a few clusters. Here there are quite a few leaves (for a painting) so I call this one Bamboo Fullness.
