 We say hello and good-bye so many times each day. We get used to the phrases and almost don’t notice the poignancy of the words, the power of the emotions and intentions being tossed out as we hurry into the house or run out the door.

I had to laugh when I saw this translated as “see you” in an online English lesson.

“Beh Omid-e Didaar” به امید دیدار — There is so much hope and longing expressed in the words. “In hope of seeing” is the direct translation. The rest is unspoken: I live in the hope that we might see each other again? That there is hope? That you and I might stay safe and survive life until that time? That we will still feel this connection until we manage to see one another again?

Perhaps I am just sentimental, but I don’t feel like it is easy to simply toss this phrase به امید دیدار aside too casually. I also think about all of the things that I live in hope of seeing, or seeing again; of being homesick; of longing for the places of my childhood; of longing for ideals of peace and harmony that we have not yet made real in the world. In the hope of . . .
